One who has left his fatherland, and comes to make a journey or to settle in a foreign country, should endeavour to develop a sense of the natural beauty ofthe new land.
His conception of life in the country of his adoption will largely depend on his susceptibility to its natural beauties, and to the disposition of its inhabitants, which, in some subtle way, is often connected with its natural scenery.
Sumatra, Java, Bali, and other Dutch East Indian islands, are full ofbeautiful yet primitive landscapes, not  yet spoilt by the so-called Western civilization, and natives are mostly free and open-hearted ; so that these islands may be a kindof fairy-land to the man who has the mind to appreciate such matters.
The assembly of some hundreds of my camera pictures which follows will, I sincerely hope, call back a vivid memory to those who have ever been in that part of the world ; it will also enable those who are living these islands to view their surroundings in a new light ; while it may help those to whom this great archipelago is unknown from personal observation to form a better idea of the multiple and wonderful charms of this paradise, which remains so full of verdant beauty, still mainly untouched by the more undesirable aspects of Occidental influence.
